This week on Sports Stars of Tomorrow, we’re unveiling my rankings of the top five basketball players from the class of 2010.
I’m not Jay Bilas or anything, but I like to think that I have some authority on the subject. After all, I’ve seen most of the top players in the nation play in person, and…

Every year, USA football releases a list of which high school football program produces the most active NFL players.
I’ve never paid much attention to this list, so I was shocked when I saw the top school.
The number one high school for producing NFL players is…
DeMatha of Maryland?…

Here’s the thing about Trey Burton.
People have doubted him his entire life.
So this latest round of criticism towards the future Florida Gator is nothing new. Ever since he first started at quarterback for Venice High School as a sophomore, Burton has heard that he can’t throw, that he should pl…

I wish the NCAA was in charge of the speed traps that frequently nab me on the way into work.
If that was the case, my car might be punished for a “heavy gas pedal.” Or come down hard on the road for allowing high speeds. Or even pulled over the guy behind me for following a speeder.
What the NCA…

I'm not supposed to play favorites when it comes to high school football.
But I will be cheering especially hard for one player this season. One player whom I've never even met.
His name is Steve McNair, Jr., a wide receiver at Oak Grove High School in Mississippi. I can't imagine what the kid is…

The quarterbacks from the class of 2010 are like a Picasso or a Cleveland Browns game. The beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
If that eye is from Rivals or Scout, it’s not a very pretty picture. For the first time in recent memory, there are zero quarterbacks in the top 50 of the Riv…

There's an interesting story in the New York Daily News this morning about Lance Stephenson, otherwise known as the big-time recruit that nobody wants.
The story does a nice job of describing one of the strangest recruiting sagas that I've ever seen. Hard to believe that Lance will possibly have t…

If there’s a more hypocritical organization in the world than the NCAA, please let me know.
In case you missed it, the University of Memphis has been accused of – gasp! –
major violations during the 2007-08 season. The strongest acc…

This happens.
That's right. Auburn is now making its recruiting trips in a limo.
Not sure what kind of message that's trying to send but -- as they say down south -- it ain't good.…

For the record, I have never met Jeremy Tyler. But it hasn’t been for lack of trying.
A co-worker and I tried to set up a story with the San Diego big man a few weeks ago when we were traveling through California for Sports Stars of Tomorrow. I was told he was “transferring” and wouldn’t be availa…

Well…so much for my
last blog.
Now, we’re concentrating on the future of John Calipari’s class-that-never-was at Memphis. Here’s how I see this whole thing shaking out for each player:…

So I’m sitting here watching the Memphis Tigers struggle in the first round of the NCAA tournament and can only think one thing: this team needs help.
The Tigers eventually held off an upset bid from 15th-seeded Cal State Northridge, but I doubt that any Tiger fan came away from this game excited…

Gather yourself, women’s basketball fans, and then take it down a notch.
In case you haven’t heard, the women’s basketball community is drooling over Brittney Griner, a 6-foot-8 center from Houston, Tex. who can dunk the ball like Shaq, LeBron, and M.J. Here’s a good example of Griner’s work:…

It was a look back at football history.
I was recently working on a story about former Denver Bronco wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, so I dove into the stack of old Rocky Mountain News* newspapers that I had stashed in my closet.
I didn’t get too far on McCaffrey material, but several items from the…

I recently had a chance to catch up with embattled high school basketball star Tristan Thompson.
Thompson was recently kicked off the team at New Jersey power St. Benedict’s prep. A few days later he resurfaced at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev.
The travel isn’t that big of a deal for Thompson, w…

For high school football fans, Wednesday is like Christmas, a birthday, and Inauguration Day all wrapped into one.
It’s time for another national signing day, where the nation’s top players finally decide where they’ll play college football.
This year lacks any Terrelle Pryor drama, as most of th…

When you meet the Wear twins, it all makes sense.
At first, you look at David and Travis Wear and wonder why they made the decision they did. They’re from the Los Angeles area, and there are plenty of great programs – both in Los Angeles and on the west coast – that would love to have a set of big…
